Apart from the four Shepherd Dogs (three varieties of the Dutch Shepherd Dog and the Schapendoes), Dutch dog breeds include mostly hunting dogs of the Spaniel-type. The country has no original guard dogs, but gave rise to a barge dog (Keeshond), originally used as vermin controller and guard dog and a Schnauzer-like dog (Smoushond) used as watchdog. The Spaniel-like Markiesje was mainly bred as a companian dog. The wolf-like Saarloos Wolfdog is the result of a breeding program started in 1921.
